Cyberspace Policy Review

In response to increasing cyberattacks against government networks and growing concerns about theft of intellectual property, President Barack Obama directed the National Security Council and the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a 60-day cyberspace policy review in February 2009. This initiative focused on assessing the US government's cyberspace plans, policies, and activities in order to inform the development of a strategic framework.

The final report, delivered in May 2009, presented 24 recommendations focused on five key areas:

  • strengthening US cybersecurity leadership
  • building greater capacity by building a larger cybersecurity workforce and increasing public awareness
  • improving information sharing between government and private sector
  • creating more effective information sharing and incident response mechanisms
  • encouraging innovation to address the nation's cybersecurity challenges
