Trends in Mobile Technology

Mobile technology is one of the fastest changing sectors of technology today. New smartphones, tablets, and laptops continue to be introduced at a fast pace. New operating systems for these devices have also emerged while other early leaders have faded. Mobile technology awareness and proficiency requires a diligent educational effort by the practitioners to become and stay proficient when working with this technology.

Why do new features often result in new security vulnerabilities or more difficulties for the examiner when attempting to acquire electronic evidence from the device?

As the operating systems that are found on mobile devices continue to mature, their feature sets expand, and this includes security features. Files that were not encrypted in the prior operating system's version may be encrypted in the next. Default security settings in prior versions may differ in future versions. New features and more security within the devices continue to expand. As a result, these two trends are often at odds.
